Amputee Coalition
The Amputee Coalition was started in 1986 to empower people with limb loss and differences. The non-profit organization provides support, resources, education, and advocacy to the community. Learn how to get involved and support the Amputee Coalition and the benefits of doing so.
The History of the Amputee Coalition
The Amputee Coalition was founded by a tight-knit group of amputee support ground volunteers with the goal of making sure no one faces limb loss alone. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Manassas, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. The coalition works with people with limb loss or differences, their family members, and healthcare providers to provide peer support, advocacy, and education. To date, the Amputee Coalition has over 350 support groups, more than 1,000 certified peer visitors, and over 65,000 constituents in their database.
The Purpose of the Amputee Coalition
The mission of the Amputee Coalition is the following, as described on their website:
“To reach out to and empower people affected by limb loss to achieve their full potential through education, support and advocacy, and to promote limb loss prevention.”
The organization lives out their mission with 3 main goals:
- Limb Loss Is Not Uncommon and Becoming Less Uncommon Every Day.
- No Amputee Alone.
- Living Well with Limb Loss.
