Residual Limb Preparation
Before being fitted for a prosthesis, there are certain steps you can take to care for your residual limb. We have a list of preparation tips, so you can ensure your prosthesis fits well, your health is taken care of, and you feel comfortable!
Residual Limb Shaping
Just as with any surgery, your body will likely swell during the recovery period. During this time, you will notice that the residual limb is larger in size. To help reduce swelling so you can be fitted for your prosthesis, perform residual limb shaping. This is done by using a compression dressing as recommended by your healthcare provider. This dressing should be kept taut and smooth. The compression stocking should be worn as much as possible except when bathing. Make sure it is applying even pressure.
Desensitize the Area
After your surgery, the residual limb will be sensitive to touch and pressure. You can help reduce this sensitivity by using light massages and tapping. Start by lightly massages or tapping the area through your compression dressing until you build up more a tolerance. You can then move on to performing the same massages while the compression dressing is off.
Always use a light, gentle touch. Doing this on a regular basis will make being fitted for your prosthesis much more comfortable and less painful.
Keep Up Your Exercises
Be sure to also follow any exercise given to you by your healthcare professional to increase your strength. These exercises will help to ensure the residual limb as well as the intact limb are kept strong and flexible. By following these exercises, you will make the transition to using a prosthesis much smoother!
Maintain Good Hygiene
Caring for your residual limb requires a few extra hygiene tasks. These apply to the residual limb itself and any supportive accessories you use such as compression dressing. Keep your residual limb clean by washing it with soap and water each day. You exfoliate gently with a warm washcloth and then pat dry. Change your compression dressing each day as you would a pair of socks. These dressings can be washed with soap and water and left to air dry.
