Prosthetic Tips
Your training with your prosthesis doesn’t end with the final fitting. In fact, that’s just the beginning! There are lots of ways to increase your comfort level, results, and overall satisfaction. In this article, we’ll review what you need to know to get the most out of your prosthesis at work, at home, on the go, and more.
Prioritize Personal Care
Keeping your socket clean and dry is one of the most important things you can do to ensure comfort with your prosthesis. Clean it daily with mild soap and water. Pat dry and allow to completely air dry.
Do the same for your residual limb. Remember both the socket and residual limb must be completely dry before using the device again. Do not use direct heat to dry the socket and avoid putting clothing on top of it while not in use.
Perform Regular Examinations of the Device and Residual Limb
You can also use this time to examine the socket for any damage or weathering. In particular, if you notice any squeaky noises, loose screws, changes in color, or issues that affect your comfort, contact your prosthetist immediately.
Take note of any redness, swelling, or flaking of the skin on your residual limb. This may indicate a need for an adjustment or further consideration from your healthcare professional.
Take Care with Prosthetic Socks
Socks can help make your lower body prostheses more comfortable. Change socks at least once a day. You may find that you need to change the socks more often during hot weather or active days. Keep extra pairs on hand. Never wear dirty or worn out socks. When in doubt, swap them out for a fresh, clean pair!
On the subject of footwear, always wear shoes with the heel height designed for your device. Never walk on your prosthesis without shoes on unless advised to do so by your healthcare professional.
Stay Healthy
Maintain a healthy body weight and diet. This one is a struggle for many of us, whether we use prosthetic devices or not. But a healthy lifestyle and steady weight are key to ensuring the proper fit of your prosthesis. If your weight or activity level do change significantly, it’s critical to contact your prosthetist for an adjustment.
